Personal Protection Training

Personal protection training is a valuable source of education that all of us can benefit from.

It isn’t only when you are out and about on the street or walking, running or cycling in public places that you need to be protected and secure, you also need protection at home and in the workplace. There are many sources of self protection, including:

  • security systems that are installed in our homes and buildings,
  • personal alarm systems that we can carry with us,
  • self defense weapons including stun guns and stun batons – as well as the popular stun gun Taser,
  • self defense pepper spray,
  • various Mace products, and
  • personal protection skills including Martial Arts.

It is a sad fact of life that wherever we are we have to be constantly alert and on our guard, whether in a remote rural area or in the hub of a busy city. People who attack, rob, rape and murder do so often without any warning whatsoever. This doesn’t mean you need to be paranoid, you just need to be prepared and aware that bad things can and do happen.

There is a growing trend within businesses in the United States to teach their employees how to defend themselves against physical attack. Personal protection training is often done in the workplace and it has been found that it makes employees more confident and less stressed. Martial arts-based training in particular helps build confidence, and because trained employees are more secure and positive, they tend to be more productive as well. Martial arts-based training also increases discipline and morale. People who are constantly concerned about their personal safety tend to be anxious and fearful, while confident employees are willing to tackle challenges.

If you decide to buy a gun – which of course is a lethal weapon – not only will you need a license, but you should also attend personal protection training classes to make sure you are able to use the weapon correctly and responsibly. You’re not likely to get this sort of training in the workplace, unless your job is in law enforcement or something similar.

Of course there are many non-lethal self defense weapons that you can use, some of which are mentioned above, and they come in many different forms. For example self defense spray devices do sometimes look like guns, but they are also available in other forms, like the pepper spray ring that you wear on your finger and canisters that look just like lipstick tubes. You just want to choose the best pepper spray for your needs. Most are made from chili pepper, while some, including some Mace products, do include a bit of teargas as well. Some companies offer personal protection training for using pepper gun and Mace products, which can be helpful.

The other sort of popular self defense gun you might want to buy is a stun gun of some sort. These also come in all sorts of shapes and sizes from the mini stun gun and cell phone stun guns, to stun batons. These, and even the most powerful stun gun, rely on contact to shock an attacker. The Taser, on the other hand, will work on contact, but it also fires projectiles that give an electroshock. These stun guns come with a flashlight incorporated in the device and a training DVD.
